Graduation Projects / Engineering Design Projects

In the Departments of Aeronautical Engineering and Astronautical Engineering, graduation projects are carried out within the scope of UCK / UZB 4901(E) and UCK / UZB 4902(E) Engineering Design courses. These courses aim to enable students to use the engineering knowledge and skills they have gained throughout their undergraduate education in an integrated manner on a real design, analysis, research, or application problem.

During the graduation project process, students are responsible for completing the steps of project topic selection, advisor selection, interim report, final report, presentation, jury evaluation, and online submission in accordance with the relevant implementation principles.

Course Offering Schedule

  • UCK / UZB 4901(E) and UCK / UZB 4902(E) courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters.
  • These courses are not offered in the summer school.
  • For 4902 courses offered in the spring semester, the submission and evaluation of the work may be extended to the summer period upon petition.
  • No similar extension is applied for other courses or semesters.

Advisor Selection

  • Students apply to relevant faculty members for graduation project advising.
  • An advisor may supervise a total of at most 10 students registered in 4901 and 4902 courses.
  • Students who cannot find an advisor may be assigned to suitable faculty members by the department.

Teamwork Principles

  • Teamwork may be carried out in graduation projects.
  • A team may consist of at most 5 students.
  • Teamwork is subject to advisor approval.
  • Even in team projects, reports and presentations must be prepared and submitted individually.
  • Each student’s submitted work must include only their own original contributions.
  • In team projects, the advisor-approved Teamwork Form must be included in the report.

Submission and Evaluation Process

Within the scope of graduation projects, interim report, final report, and presentation submissions are made according to the announced schedule of the relevant semester. Submissions must be completed through the current system and in accordance with the announced formats.

Output Submission Time Evaluation Weight
Interim Report 7th week of the semester Evaluated by the advisor. 20%
Final Report - Formal Evaluation 14th week of the semester Formally evaluated by the Commission. 10%
Final Report - Scientific Evaluation 14th week of the semester Evaluated by the advisor and jury in terms of content and quality. 45%
Presentation Video presentation for 4901; live presentation for 4902 Evaluated by the jury. 25%

Presentation Format

Course Presentation Format
4901 The student prepares a “Graduation Project in Two Minutes” video presentation consisting of 2 slides. The presentation must be completed in 120 seconds and submitted as a video recording.
4902 The student prepares a presentation consisting of at most 15 slides. A presentation time of 10-15 minutes is allocated, and the presentation is delivered live to the jury.

Report Format

Reports must be prepared using the announced MS Office or LaTeX templates and submitted in PDF format. The report format is derived from the AIAA conference paper template. The aim is to support students in preparing work that can be presented at scientific events and in producing a publishable-level 4902 final report.

The 4901 final report consists of the following sections:

  • Abstract
  • Introduction and Objective
  • Method and Resource Analysis
  • Project-specific section or sections
  • Results and Outputs
  • References

Required appendices in the reports:

  • The Teamwork Form is required if teamwork is carried out.
  • The Work Schedule is required.
  • The Ethics Declaration is required.
  • If necessary, detailed analyses, experimental results, drawings, source codes, and similar materials may be included as appendices.

Ethics Declaration and Originality

Students declare through the Ethics Declaration form that the work they submit is original and that they have not engaged in any act that may be considered plagiarism. Scientific sources, technical documents, textbooks, patents, theses, and previous graduation project reports are included within the scope of plagiarism evaluation.

Submitted reports may be checked for plagiarism when deemed necessary. If unethical citation practices or non-original content are detected, the student may be considered unsuccessful.

Design Project Presentation Event

A presentation event is organized on a date determined for students who will make their 4902 final presentations. The purpose of this event is to provide students with an academic presentation experience similar to a symposium. The event is planned to be open, as far as possible, to all students and faculty members of the faculty.

Uploading Final Reports and Presentation Videos to the System

As of the 2023-2024 Fall Semester, the submission of design project proposal forms, interim reports, final reports, and videos for UCK 4901, UCK 4902, UZB 4901E, and UZB 4902E courses has been carried out through the Design Project Submission System.
